Magnetization Transfer (MT) MR Imaging in Patients with Posttraumatic Epilepsy
نویسندگان
چکیده
There is an uncertainty regarding the time period for seizures onset and the possible role of tissue changes for constituting an epileptogenic focus in intractable seizures following head trauma. MT MRI was performed in 44 individuals (13 controls, and 31 with seizures from 1-10 years following trauma) to assess the severity of tissue damage and its relationship with intractability. The group with MT abnormality beyond T2 abnormality had a significantly higher intractability of seizures compared to the one with MT abnormality within T2 abnormality. We conclude that MT imaging may help in predicting the seizure intractability in delayed posttraumatic epilepsy.

Magnetization transfer MR imaging in patients with posttraumatic epilepsy.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Intractable epilepsy is a well-recognized complication following head trauma, and many factors have been implicated in its pathogenesis. This study was performed to determine the severity of tissue damage after severe head injury as assessed with magnetization transfer (MT) MR imaging and the relationship of this damage with seizure intractability. METHODS Forty-four pa...
متن کاملPathological Assessment of Brain White Matter in Relapsing-Remitting MS Patients using Quantitative Magnetization Transfer Imaging
Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by lesions in the white matter (WM) of the central nervous system. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most specific and sensitive method for diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. However, the ability of conventional MRI to show histopathologic heterogeneity of MS lesions is insufficient. Quantitative magnetization transfer imaging (qMTI) is a rel...
متن کاملWhole-brain histogram and voxel-based analyses of apparent diffusion coefficient and magnetization transfer ratio in celiac disease, epilepsy, and cerebral calcifications syndrome.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Diffusion and magnetization transfer (MT) techniques have been applied to the investigation with MR of epilepsy and have revealed changes in patients with or without abnormalities on MR imaging. We hypothesized that also in the coeliac disease (CD), epilepsy and cerebral calcifications (CEC) syndrome diffusion and MT techniques could reveal brain abnormalities undetected ...
متن کاملMagnetization Transfer and Amide Proton Transfer MRI of Neonatal Brain Development
Purpose. This study aims to evaluate the process of brain development in neonates using combined amide proton transfer (APT) imaging and conventional magnetization transfer (MT) imaging. Materials and Methods. Case data were reviewed for all patients hospitalized in our institution's neonatal ward. Patients underwent APT and MT imaging (a single protocol) immediately following the routine MR ex...
متن کاملEpilepsy with focal cerebral calcification: role of magnetization transfer MR imaging.
BACKGROUND Some patients with focal cerebral calcification (FCC) have no seizure or a benign course of epilepsy, whilst others with a similar lesion have uncontrolled epilepsy. AIMS To look for perilesional hyperintensity, presumed to be indicative of gliosis, around FCC on magnetization transfer (MT) MRI and to correlate seizure outcome with its presence. SETTING AND DESIGN Case control st...
